Dia De Reyes

Dia de Reyes and Candelaria Events

“Dia de Reyes,” Three Kings Day, the 12th day after Christmas, when the Magi arrived bearing gifts for baby Jesus, and the traditional day for Mexican children to receive presents.  La Playa celebrates this day with presents for the children and delicious food provided by the ESL students. La Playa Center is an ESL school for adults with accompanying childcare located at the Boys and Girls Club. On this special day, children and their parents will eat a Rosca de Reyes, a sweet bread shaped like a wreath, with candied fruit on top, and figurines of baby Jesus are baked inside.

The persons who find the figurines in their piece of cake are expected to contribute food and host a party on “Dia de la Candelaria,” or “Candlemas,” celebrated on February 2nd, when tamales are traditionally served.
